Returning a rental car early

Plan an early return without assuming that unused days automatically receive a refund.

Updated 12 October 2026

Before you confirm

A change of itinerary can make an early return sensible, but a vehicle reserved for several days has agreed commercial terms. Review whether your daily, weekly or monthly quote allows a partial refund, a rate recalculation or no credit for unused time.

Plan the practical details

Contact the company with the new date, time and address before moving the car. A shorter rental does not automatically create an available collection slot. Ask whether the original delivery and collection charges change when the rental period changes.

Keep the arrangement clear

Complete the same inspection, fuel check and odometer record used for an ordinary return. Early departure is not a reason to leave the car unattended or hand keys to unapproved hotel staff. Get written acknowledgement of the handover.

Close the rental carefully

Ask for the revised itemised total and any refund process in writing. Keep the agreed calculation so that a later charge can be checked against the change. Arrange your onward transport separately, especially if an early flight triggered the decision.

A practical booking example

If a five-day stay becomes three days, request two answers: whether collection is available at the new time and how the price changes under the agreement. The new collection appointment alone does not prove that two days will be refunded. Before confirming the change, compare the revised total with any original package conditions and keep the written response. Take return photos even if your flight leaves sooner than planned.

Questions to ask the rental team

Use these questions to clarify the selected vehicle’s terms before relying on a general website description. Keep the answers with your booking confirmation.

  • Is unused time refundable under this booking?
  • Does early return change the original package rate?
  • Is collection available at the proposed address?
  • When will the revised total be documented?

Your planning checklist

  • Unused-day policy read
  • Revised collection approved
  • Fuel and condition recorded
  • Final calculation confirmed

Frequently asked questions

Will I get money back for unused days?

Only the agreed booking terms can establish this. Ask for a written calculation before accepting an early-return change.

What should I confirm for this booking?

Keep the selected vehicle, relevant permissions, charges and handover arrangements in the written rental agreement. Ask the company to clarify any difference between an enquiry and the confirmed booking.
